Black Gum: One of our most beautiful native trees; somewhat pyramidal when young with densely set branches, some of which are pendulous. SIZE: 30 to 50’ in height with a spread of 20 to 30’ can grow to 100’ or more but this size is rare. LEAF COLOR: Lustrous dark green in summer changing to fluorescent yellow to orange to scarlet to purple colors in the fall; one of our best, most consistent, and most beautiful trees in fall. RATE: Slow to medium, 12 to 15’ over a 10 to 15 year period, easily accelerated with adequate water and fertility.
